I love applique. It's quick, easy, and always ends up looking the perfect amount eclectic. It's also one of my favorite techniques to use in gift-making. American Apparel makes some great cotton gear to use in these types of projects. I bought this hat for $6.50. It comes in 6 other colors and is a great size (not too teeny tiny). I used it to create the personalized baby gift shown below.
Here's a quick look at how to take on this baby hat applique project.
For this project I used the following materials: fabric scraps, American Apparel hat, embroidery needle and thread, embroidery hoop, and steam-a-seam adhesive sheets.
I used my favorite font American typewriter, and printed out the letters (size 95) I needed to include on the hat. I then traced each letter onto fabric, cut the fabric accordingly, and placed each letter on the adhesive paper. Note: the steam-a-seam paper has very easy to follow instructions on the packaging. There is a sticky side and a not sticky side. Fabric attaches to the sticky side. The non-sticky side is then ironed on to the garment (somehow I always mess this up.....)
I placed the letters onto the hat and ironed over them. If the iron is hot enough, the adhesive paper should magically attach in no time.
Using an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric in place, I then outlined each letter with embroidery floss for extra security (plus I think it adds a nice finished look).
There you go.

Enjoy your day!!!

Love these ideas, and I love American Apparel gear — so soft! OK, I am making a cheesy Father's Day mug for Ben, but was wondering if you had an idea of where I should order it from? Last year I did Shutterfly, and it was super easy but I almost wish the template was simpler or even totally plain. Just wondering if you have a source. THanks!
